Iconic Spanish wine from Torres, Mas La Plana is celebrating its 40th vintage launch this year and the wine is now available to the many lovers of Spanish wine here in Hong Kong. The wine, that was a pioneering at its time was first released in 1970 and, 40 years on is still one of Spain’s most highly regarded wines.
Mas La Plana is a 100 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, crafted from a small 29 hectare vineyard in Penedes and rose to fame when it’s 1970 vintage won top honours in the Paris Wine Olympiad where it triumphed over the world’s leading wines including Chateau Latour.
The new release, the 2010 vintage is an elegant wine but keeps it’s typical Spanish flair and has a silky like mouth feel and is smooth and velvety as it slips by the back palate. We had the pleasure of tasting it at this year’s Vinexpo Asia Pacific with current General Manager of Torres, Miguel Torres Maczassek.
“We made the wine from Cabernet Sauvignon because if you can imagine in the 70’s you started talking about Garnacha people were not understanding it at all”, said Miguel. “The Cabernet Sauvignon test was good proof to say ‘look you can also drink Spanish wines’”.
“The 1970 vintage won the Wine Olympics in Paris in 1979 and beat all the French Chateaux such as Lafite Rothschild, Petrus, Haut Brion”, Miguel goes on to say. “It put the wine on the map and it was a very important year for us”.
“The 2010 is from a very cool vintage, and this for Mas La Plana is always positive because it delays the ripening of the grapes. It retains better acidity and aromas and has more complexity”, he says of the new release.
